Cycling is a great way to get around the Virginia Tech campus and Blacksburg. Cyclists are permitted on all sidewalks and shared pathways on campus. Biking on sidewalks within Town of Blacksburg limits, or across any crosswalk is however prohibited. Campus police will warn or ticket cyclists going the wrong way around Drillfield Drive, assuming they don't get hit in the process. There are several bike shops around town including Hokie Spokes, the Bike Barn and East Coasters. The Huckleberry Trail is a great route for longer rides. Parking Services "requires" that all bicycles used on-campus be registered, in order to help retrieve stolen bicycles and combat theft. There is no registration fee, but it requires placing a uniquely identifiable stickeron your bike, as an equivalent to a parking permit. Hokie Bike Hub, located in the Alternative Transportation Center on the ground floor of the Perry Street Parking Garage, provides tools and training for students, faculty, and staff to work on their bicycles.
Beginning in fall 2010, the Virginia Tech Police began placing bait bikes equipped with GPS trackers in bike racks around campus in attempt to combat bike theft.
