The idea for an online encyclopedia of [[free information]] for [[Hokie|Hokies]] was initially floated within the [[Free Culture]] chapter at Virginia Tech during 2009 or earlier. Original content was slowly amassed on the LUUG Wiki in preparation for some time. Thanks to funding for a server from the [[Student Engineers' Council]] and member contributions for the domain, the [[Linux and Unix Users Group]] put together the necessary infrastructure in the fall of 2010 and spring of 2011 to finally launch gobblerpedia.org. During the fall of 2010, there was talk that the Student Government Association would be launching a wiki. The status of their project is currently unknown.

Original content was slowly amassed on the LUUG Wiki in preparation for some time.
