Gobblerpedia has been online since Friday, February 11th, 2011. It was initially populated with content from the Linux and Unix Users Group at Virginia Tech Wiki and Wikipedia.

History

The idea for an online encyclopedia of free information for Hokies was initially floated within the Free Culture chapter at Virginia Tech during 2009 or earlier. Original content was slowly amassed on the LUUG Wiki in preparation for some time. Thanks to funding for a server from the Student Engineers' Council and member contributions for the domain, the Linux and Unix Users Group put together the necessary infrastructure in the fall of 2010 and spring of 2011 to finally launch gobblerpedia.org.

Naming

Originally, the name Hokiepedia was proposed for the wiki. However, after finding the hokiepedia.com domain serving advertising and reading about the Hokie Real Estate lawsuit, a term less likely to cause confusion and provoke the wrath of Larry Hincker was chosen. The other proposed names included VTPedia and Hokiepokia.

Competition

During the fall of 2010, there was talk that the Student Government Association would be launching a wiki. The status of their project is currently unknown. The ViaTalk broadband phone system has a wiki hosted at vtwiki.org.
