University Bookstore

The University Bookstore is a service operated by Virginia Tech Services, Inc., a nonprofit entity that gives its profits to either Virginia Tech or the Virginia Tech Foundation.[1] This company also operates the Volume Two Bookstore, a convenience store in Dietrick Hall, as well as the laundry machines in dorms. The bookstore sells textbooks, Virginia Tech licensed apparel, and computers.

Controversies

  • The bookstore requires photo identification to make a credit or debit purchase, which is a direct and egregious violation of both Visa's and Mastercard's merchant agreements. Reports to either company have yet to be met with action against the bookstore.
  • According to Glassdoor, employees are generally unhappy with the leadership.[2]
  • The bookstore has a controversial policy which requires customers to leave bags and backpacks unattended near the exit, making them vulnerable to theft.
  • Many students dislike the prices charged by the bookstore, as well as their return policy, and have instead resorted to purchasing books from alternative retailers, such as Amazon, BookHolders, or the Tech Bookstore.
