Ambler Johnston Hall
Ambler Johnston Hall (AJ W/E, #32/33) is a co-ed dormitory in the Summit Community. The building itself was completed in 1969 is clad in Hokie Stone. The building is named for James Ambler Johnston.
Beginning in summer 2009, East Ambler Johnston Hall was renovated for use by the University Honors program as a residential college. The construction was completed in summer 2011, and the building was occupied beginning in fall 2011. West Ambler Johnston Hall went under a similar renovation to be used by the Residential College which was completed for the fall 2012 semester. Ambler Johnston Hall is one of the only dorms on campus with air-conditioning, suite-style rooms, and other often-envied amenities; for this reason, special applications are required in order to live in this building.
The 2011--2012 renovations replaced the four elevators, added a new cooling tower, got rid of lots of asbestos, and added an emergency generator.[1] The generator is probably diesel and rated at a few hundred kilowatts (given its size). It's located just outside the service lot, across from the covered bike racks and surrounded by a Hokie Stone wall with gates. It's probably there for Schiffert more than anything else.
