Fleet Services (FS) is the department within VT's Transportation and Campus Services which provides loaned vehicles for departmental use and/or approved travel.
Controversies
Certain organizations have reported having extremely difficult times reserving and obtaining vehicles and consider their interactions with Fleet Services employees to be fairly hostile encounters, potentially including employees giving intentionally misleading information.
The following is a narrative account of what someone experienced when attempting to obtain a vehicle for an approved travel plan:
I was able to log onto my fleet commander account (for which I recieved a confirmation email) but when I tried to click make reservation it asked me to login again saying I didn't have permission. The travel plan had been approved before this. I called up fleet services and talked to Andy. I gave him my name and explained the problem and he checked my fund number and told me it was invalid. I reconfirmed it several times and Andy continued to report that it was invalid. I told him I was looking at the approved request, told him the fund manager, department number, and fund number again. I also confirmed this with the vice-president and he reported it was the same fund number used before. Eventually Andy transfered me to Steve who I explained the situation again. He said that I was not approved by the fund manager. I told him I was from a student organization and we had an approved travel plan for myself and wanted to understand why this wasn't enough. He told me that the ECE department or the Department of Student Affairs was supposed to send them an email on my behalf which they didn't do. He also said they were out of vehicles and it didn't matter. I asked for him to explain to me what exactly should have happened so next time this doesn't repeat. He said that the ECE department never sent an email and that as a student I am not allowed to make reservations and while I was asking him for clarification on why having a travel form approved for my account wasn't sufficient the call was lost. He never addressed the issue of the invalid fund number and when he found out I was from a student organization his tone became rude and dismissive.
