The Hokie Passport is the official student, faculty and staff identification at Virginia Tech. Its human readable features are the name, ID number, photo and birthday of the owner. Its machine readable features include a barcode and a magnetic stripe. Hokie Passports are used to as library cards, dining plan cards, and can work as a debit card for services on and off campus, such as laundry machines and downtown merchants.

Magnetic Stripes

Tracks 1 and 3 of the magnetic strip are unused. Track 2 contains the 9-digit student ID number and a 4-digit card identifier, presumably to differentiate between different physical cards issued when one is lost or stolen. The thin stripe near the middle is used by the copiers on the fourth floor of Newman Library.
