Captain Charles Erastus Vawter Sr. (??? - 1905) served as a member of the Board of Visitors from 1886 to 1900, and as rector of the board from 1889 to 1900, back when the college was known as the "Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College." He held a degree in mathematics from the University of Virginia.[1]
Vawter was responsible for recruiting John McBryde from the University of South Carolina, as well as persuading the Edison Company to install a power plant on campus.[2]
